Position Description: Graduate Assistant for Student Organizations


The Office of Student Activities (SA) is seeking a graduate assistant for the 2019-2021 academic years in the area of Student Organizations.  This position will serve as an important link between the Coordinator for Student Organizations and over 200 Student Organizations on campus. This GA works very closely with the Coordinator for Student Organizations on a daily basis to ensure that the students are receiving guidance and assistance in their planned activities and events. The GA for Student Organizations also serves as an advisor to the student Homecoming Committee and the SGA Election Commission. This position will be required to maintain certain aspects of the SA web and social media sites. Candidates who can start in the summer for additional pay, and are looking to hold the position for two years are preferred. This position is supervised by the Coordinator of Student Organizations. This is a 20-hour/week position that includes tuition remission (up to 12 credits per semester) and a bi-weekly stipend. 

Primary Duties:
·        Develop an understanding of the mission and vision of Towson University (TU), Division of Student Affairs, and Office of Student Activities
·        Assist the Office of Student Activities Assistant Director of Leadership and Coordinator of Student Organizations with the creation, evolution, and execution of the vision of student organization management and development
  • Assist with and be knowledgeable about the Involved@TU system, including but not limited to approving submissions, adding news articles, events, and tasks
  • Assist with all facets of Homecoming planning and execution including co-advising the student Homecoming Committee
  • Assist with all facets of Student Government elections including co-advising the SGA Election Commission
  • Assist with planning, promoting and registration of Student Involvement Fairs and Student Group Summits.
  • Maintain and create files, handbooks, pamphlets, and additional resources for student organizations and advisors
  • Have a working knowledge of student organization policies and procedures and work to educate and enforce them with student organizations
  • Work collaboratively with the Coordinator and key student leaders to improve and maintain good relations with student organizations
  • Work with communicating programs to the general public through Towerlight ads, posters, and TU Today
·        Develop and initiate special projects such as trainings and advisor workshops
  • Work with Student Activities Marketing, Art Services, and Print Services to get designs for events.
·        Assist with programmatic and assessment initiatives within Office of Student Activities
·        Attend department staff meetings/trainings/retreats
·        Assist Office of Student Activities with department and/or university informational sessions (i.e. new student orientations, recruitment sessions, etc.)
·        Participate in department committees
·        Assist with the staffing of the front desk area which includes answering phone calls and providing assistance to visitors to the office
·        Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
·        Admitted into a Towson University graduate or certificate program
·        Varied student organization involvement as an undergraduate
·        Experience with Homecoming or SGA is preferred
·        Preferred experience with student advising and support
·        Ability to prioritize and complete tasks independently
·        Awareness of diversity, social justice, and inclusion concepts
·        Must be student friendly and customer service-oriented
·        Ability to complete projects through all stages of management
·        Excellent oral & written communications skills
·        Knowledge of applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Outlook
·        Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, display flexibility, and work well under pressure
·        Comfortable working in a dynamic, student friendly, and fast-paced environment
·        Creativity and excellent work ethic
·        Ability to delegate tasks
